ASU Students to Sing at Vann Vocal Institute

Five voice majors at Alabama State University will join the most talented young voices in Alabama when they perform at the 11th Anniversary of the Vann Vocal Institute March 9-10, at Huntingdon College.

ASU Department of Music students Matthew Chappell (tenor), Cheyenne Gibson (soprano), Tyler Mitchell (baritone) and Zabriel Rivers (countertenor) will perform during the student master class. The students had to submit a recording in order to be selected to perform.

The special event, offered in partnership with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, brings young singers from high schools and colleges across the region to Huntingdon for master class training with prominent international opera stars from the Metropolitan Opera.

Participants can expect vocal coaching from various artists, as well as a public master class session with internationally acclaimed opera singer David Cangelosi.

Kicking off the event is a Celebrity Recital on Thursday, March 8, at 7 p.m. At 9.a.m. on Friday, there will be master classes; and at 9 a.m. Saturday, participants can attend a “Super Master Class,” followed by the Emerging Artists Recital at 5 p.m.  All events will be at Ligon Chapel-Flowers Hall at Huntingdon.

Master classes are free and open to the public, as are both recitals.

The Vann Vocal Institute, named for its benefactor the late Roy D. Vann, a Montgomery pharmacist who loved opera, is a coaching workshop focused on operatic repertoire.
