National Summer Transportation Institute, June 3 - 24, 2017

The National Summer Transportation Instittue is a program in which Continuing Education introduces ninth and tenth grade students to promising careers in transportation and encourages them to begin charting a course that will help them prepare for these careers.
 
The overall mission of the NSTI Program is prepare each student to become an integral part of the transportation workforce of the 21st century by focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through curriculum development and enrichment activities.
 
The Institute is a residential program.  This program is being offered to our Black Belt Region in an effort to fulfull a dual mission:
 
(1) To enhance employment opportunities in transportation for young people in under-represented grounps and
 
(2) To motivate and prepare them for their future in our transportation industry.

Application Deadline: May 22, 2017

 


The deadline to apply for the 2017 National Summer Transportation Institute is May 22, 2017.

 

The application package and the criteria for selecting the students will include the following:

STUDENT CRITERIA 

  1. Students must be in the 9th or 10th grade for the 2017-2018 school year.
  2. Students must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  3. Students must have completed and qualified to enroll in pre-algebra for the 2017-2018 school year.
  4. Letters of recommendation from principal and one teacher from school attended 
  5. Submit scores on standardized tests
  6. Submit brief essay explaining interest in mathematics and technology, familiarity with careers in transportation, interest in NSTI and how can the program assist in meeting career goals
  7. Students are expected to fully participate in all 22 days of this residential program.
 A screening committee composed of university faculty, staff, and representatives from the schools will review applications and select fifteen (15) students for the program
