The Department of Biological Sciences offers the following degree programs to prepare students for careers in teaching, research, and industry.
Bachelors (B.S.) in Biology
The Department of Biological offers the Bachelor of Science degree in biology and marine biology. A minor is offered in biology. The department cooperates with the College of Education to offer programs of study leading to teacher certification in biology education and general science education. Biology majors are required to complete the Senior Comprehensive Examination in Biology before they can be recommended for graduation.
Masters (M.S.) in Biology
The M.S. program provides diverse course work in biological science and specialized research training in a selected biological science discipline. The average time to graduation is approximately two years. The M.S. track is also used to prepare students whose academic background may not be adequate to enroll directly in the Ph.D. program in Microbiology.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Microbiology
The objective of the Ph.D. degree in Microbiology is to impart advanced scientific knowledge in microbiology, to provide training opportunities in conducting state-of-the-art basic research in microbiology, and closely related disciplines. The Ph.D. program prepares students for careers in independent research or related careers in academia, industry or government. The average time to graduation ranges between four to five years.
