MISSION:

The Department of Biological Sciences provides educative experiences which allow the students to learn and develop an understanding of basic biological principles and concepts. Biology majors have the opportunity to participate in a variety of special programs and activities as part of their total educational process. The department strives to stimulate and prepare students for competent service in their preferred careers - be it teaching, industry, or in the health related fields. Faculty members work to inspire students to obtain the best background for subsequent advanced training in graduate or professional schools. At the same time, the department encourages both its faculty and students to pursue research in their respective areas.

DEGREE PROGRAMS:

The department offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in biology, Bachelor of Science degree in biology and marine biology, and Master of Science in biology. The department cooperates with the College of Education to offer programs of study leading to teacher certification in biology education and general science education. Biology majors are required to complete the Senior Comprehensive Examination in Biology before they can be recommended for graduation. The department also offers a minor in biology.

NUMBER OF FACULTY:

Currently, there are nine (9) faculty members in the department. All faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences offer challenging academic instruction, while helping each student develop the skills needed to be successful in his/her chosen career.

The faculty is engaged in a variety of research projects in the broad areas of microbiology, cell biology, animal physiology, molecular biology, environmental toxicology, and molecular plant taxonomy.
 
NUMBER OF MAJORS:

There are approximately 290 majors (sophomores, juniors and seniors) currently enrolled in the department.
