Carlton McClain

Carlton McClain says most people he knows were quite surprised when he made the choice to attend Alabama State University. McClain is a native of Huntsville, the home of ASU’s chief in-state rival, Alabama A&M University.

His high school guidance counselor, an ASU alumna, inspired him to consider attending ASU.

“Being from Huntsville, everyone expects you to go to A&M or one of the community colleges in town. I had a counselor who attended ASU, and I would go in her office and see ASU paraphernalia on the wall and desk,” McClain said. “I figured that she had a lot of pride about her school, so there must be something great about ASU.”

McClain is majoring in computer science with a minor in mathematics, and he is a member of ASPIRE mentors, HBCU-UP and the NAACP.

He says that he has been impressed by ASU’s faculty because they are experienced and because they truly care about the professional and personal development of their students.

“I enjoy the faculty the most,” McClain said. “The faculty work with you and want to see you succeed. They strive to see you strive to be the best; they go out of their way to help you, and I love that.”

In addition to the University’s caring faculty, McClain is fond of many of ASU’s longtime traditions. The Turkey Day Classic, ASU’s Homecoming, is McClain’s favorite tradition because of the spirited alumni support.

“It’s nice to see alumni come back from as far back as the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s to show their pride in ASU,” he said.

Upon graduation, McClain would like to further his education at either Auburn University of Georgia State University. Ultimately, his goal is to become a software developer for Boeing or Aviation and Missile Command, which is on Redstone Arsenal in his hometown of Huntsville.

and wants to become a software developer for Boeing or Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM), which is on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.
