Dr. Gary Grandison

A love for the game of golf and a passion for youth development through sports and physical education are what drive Dr. Gary Grandison, assistant professor in ASU’s Health Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Department at Alabama State University.

The Pritchard, Ala., native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from ASU in 1997. He then earned a Master of Sport Science in sports management in 1999 and a Doctor of Sports Management in 2003 from the U.S. Sports Academy.

Grandison said the best thing about teaching at ASU is the opportunity to work hands on with students. He teaches undergraduate and graduate-level physical education courses, and he is the head coach of ASU’s men’s and women’s golf teams.

“ASU provides a land of opportunity for the self-driven student,” Grandison said. “To be successful at ASU, or at anything in life, you must have an understanding of your true purpose, your gift and your true vocation.”

As an ASU undergraduate student, Grandison remembers taking full advantage of the University’s “land of opportunity.” He was a Student Orientation Services (S.O.S.) leader and he played on the golf team. He said his experiences at ASU provided fond memories and helped him realize his own gifts.

Outside of the classroom Grandison enjoys reading, playing basketball, golfing and participating in community service.

Prior to coming to ASU, Grandison worked for the Boy Scout of America, Boys and Girls Club, Nike, Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Alabama Sports Festival and the PGA Tour.
