Janel Elise Grant

Janel Elise Grant credits her experiences at Alabama State University with preparing her for the “real world.”

Grant earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in communications at ASU in 2003. She currently is a member services/event manager for the Atlanta Homebuilders Association and is the owner of Janel Elise Events, a boutique wedding and event planning company in Atlanta.

At The Atlanta Home Builders Association, she develops and implements meetings, educational classes, fundraising events and galas for members of the non-profit association.

Through her business, Janel Elise Events, Grant designs and coordinates custom weddings and parties for a variety of clients.

When she is not working, Grant is busy serving her community through a yearly outreach event called “Back to School,” which provides children with backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, health screenings, clothes and other necessities.

“It's a huge event and logistically challenging,” Grant said. “But I really love seeing the kids’ faces when they get their new backpacks and school uniforms.”

Grant, who attended ASU on an academic scholarship, said the University helped her connect with her history and taught her self-reliance and responsibility.

“ASU taught me to be proud of who I am. I am a military brat, so I was raised around all different cultures; ASU helped me to gain a sense of identity and heritage,” Grant said. “ASU was also the first place where I had to learn about real responsibility. I was on scholarship, and I knew that it was up to me to keep up my grades and take care of my business in order to keep it.”

Grant recalls that her favorite ASU professor was Dr. E-K. Daufin, professor of communications media. She describes Daufin as a strict educator who challenged her students to achieve excellence and provided students with “a wealth of knowledge.”

As an ASU student, grant was a member of Student Orientation Services, and she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

As an alumna, Grant says that she is excited and proud of the progress that ASU has made in the expansion of the campus and the addition of new academic programs.

“I’m ecstatic over ASU’s transformation,” Grant said. “It’s important that ASU continues to evolve and prepares its students academically to enter the workforce.”
