First and Only HBCU in South to Offer BFA Degree in Dance

While other Historically Black Colleges and Universities offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Alabama State University is the first and only HBCU in the South to offer the BFA degree specifically in dance.

Our program has two performing companies: Eclectic Dance Company, a campus-wide audition-based ensemble, and the Alabama State University Dance Company, a pre-professional ensemble of BFA dance majors exclusively.

BFA/Dance Program


Inspired by Dean Tommie Stewart’s vision to formally bring dance to the forefront at Alabama State University, it now offers a Bachelor Fine Arts degree in dance. ASU is one of only two institutions of higher learning in the entire state of Alabama, and is the first and only HBCU in the nation to offer the degree specifically in dance. ASU’s BFA/Dance Program attracts talented students from across the United States.

Alabama State University’s BFA/Dance Program provides a rigorous and comprehensive dance curriculum designed to produce high caliber, diverse, and technically proficient dance artists, who contribute to the field of dance regionally, nationally, and globally. With ballet, modern, African or Hip Hop as foundationally techniques, students can further choose jazz or tap as a focused elective. With comfortable classroom student to teacher ratios, individualized attention is given to each student’s professional dance development and unique talents within the BFA/Dance Program at Alabama State University.

The mission of the Alabama State University’s BFA/Dance Program is to cultivate student’s creative, performance, and scholarly aptitude through exposure to diverse practical and philosophical approaches to dance studies, while developing and nurturing their technical proficiency in various dance forms.

 

 Vision

 

 

The vision of the Alabama State University BFA/Dance Program is to produce high caliber, diverse, and technically proficient dance artists, who contribute to the field of dance on a local, regional, national, and global stage. Our quest is to empower students to become productive scholars, creative artists, and work as collaborative individuals. Students confidently take their place in the world by understanding contextually the significance of the African diaspora on the world of dance.

In-Person Auditions

Auditions are held for those interested in pursuing a dance major or minor, as well as those seeking a dance scholarship. In-person audition dates for the 2017-18 academic year are:

The BFA Dance Program at ASU accepts online audition submissions year round; however, if you are interested in receiving a scholarship, it is highly recommended that you attend one of the two on-campus auditions.
