HPER LogoWelcome to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER). The HPER Department at Alabama State University (ASU) is a part of the College of Education (COE). The Department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physical Education (P-12) and Health Education (6-12) with graduates receiving teacher certification from the State of Alabama, or an undergraduate non-teaching degree in Recreation with a concentration in Recreational Therapy. The Department also offers Alternative “A” degrees in Physical Education and Health Education, as well as a minor in Health Education.

All teacher preparation programs in the College of Education are NCATE accredited, which ensures that the Department is committed to excellence, thereby providing a variety of courses that acknowledge the diverse interests of HPER majors, as well as the general student body. HPER academic programs are built on content, practical experiences, collaborative research, community partnerships, scholarly achievement, and service learning that prepare students to meet professional and personal goals.

Departmental Mission and Goals


The mission of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) at Alabama State University (ASU) reflects the ASU and College of Education (COE) missions. The disciplines of HPER are based on humanitarian and democratic ideals of self-determination, respect for human diversity, educational justice, and the right of individuals to make informed choices. HPER’s disciplines are grounded in recognized bodies of knowledge; that incorporate content knowledge, skills, dispositions, and performance standards from the fields of the biological and physical sciences, the clinical sciences, the social sciences, and education. The HPER department is committed to excellence, thereby providing a variety of courses that acknowledge the diverse interests of HPER majors as well as the general student body.

The mission of the Department of HPER sustains the role of facilitator of learning by engaging teacher candidates in the areas of Physical Education and Health Education, and non-teaching degree majors in recreational therapy. These academic programs are built on content, practical experiences, collaborative research, community partnerships, scholarly achievement, and service learning that prepare students to meet professional and personal goals. One of the overreaching goals of the department is to promote and contribute to the wellbeing of our pre-service professionals through quality education programs and interactive activities that enhance quality of life not only in Alabama, but nationally and internationally.
