Placing Learning and the Learning First

Welcome to the Center for Innovative Educational Practices and Services (CIEPS) at Alabama State University. CIEPS was developed to serve as a conduit for bridging teaching and learning into the 21st Century. We support increasing the quality and delivery of academic programs and enhancing student achievement and excellence in teaching at all levels through continuous, high-quality professional development. In addition, strengthening student learning inside and out of the classroom is among many planned CIEPS initiatives. Consistent with our University’s mission, the Center for Innovative Educational Practices and Services is committed to fostering a student-­centered learning environment through pedagogy, research, technology and resource support.

Teaching effectiveness is essential to connecting student learning outcomes with assessment. We also exist  to enhance retention. Another scope of CIEPS is to align curriculum and assessment practices across colleges for continunity in aligning program goals and the attainment of education objectives. In short, CIEPS is a comprehensive resource center at Alabama State University for all faculty, students and departments at every stage of development.



The Center for Innovative Educational Practices and Services mission is to support innovation in teaching and learning by providing data-driven professional development that encourages improved teaching delivery and student learning; the alignment of curricula and co-curriculum experiences with learning outcomes and assessment and advancements in teaching research and the scholarship of teaching.

In continual support of our University, CIEPS commits to enhancing the building blocks of student development, focus, persistence, and reward by championing learning as a lifelong pursuit, for both faculty and students.


The Center for Innovative Educational Practices and Services is dedicated to the transformation of Alabama State University's academe into a professional learning community where placing learning and the learner first is inspired, supported and accomplished through good teaching practices, effective assessment and student engagement.

facebook logoFacebook: Not only is Facebook (FB) the world’s most popular social networking website to connect with family and friends, but it can also be utilize as a learning portal. FB allows students to connect with their professors. Have you ever felt approaching one of your professors is/was a daunting task? If your professor has established a classroom FB page, it reduces the pressure of communicating online verses face-to-face interaction. It also provides instant learning and homework support. If your professor has established a page and he or she is online, you can still receive assistance while you’re at home preparing for assignments, instead of waiting the next day. Twitter LogoTwitter: An online social networking and micro blogging service that enables users to send and read “tweets,” which are text limited to 140 characters. As well as collecting data from Twitter followers that’s very beneficial to learning. One example is the UK War Cabinet from the UK National Archives. By visiting or following this Twitter account you can watch the events of WWII 70 years to the day through the original Cabinet Papers. Pinterest LogoPinterest: A pinboard style photo sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections and videos such as events, interests, tips, and hobbies. Users can browse other pinboards for images and videos and re-pin to their own pinboards. Pinterest is also used for educational purposes such as sharing visual material for collaboration and peer critiques, academic resources, and view amazing examples of projects to pick out themes and ideas for course work. Instagram: An online networking site used for visual storytelling for everyone. Making an account and utilizing it to network with different people in your classroom and on the campus of Alabama State University. You will be able to share notes, receive help on your work and also find out many different sources available on campus. Periscope lets you broadcast live video to the world. Going live will instantly notify your followers who can join, comment and send you hearts in real time.
