ASU UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
FRESHMEN EXPERIENCE PROGRAMS –-GATEWAY TO
STUDENT SUCCESS
Welcome to the University College, where Dean Evelyn Hodge presides. University College is the “home” college for all freshmen and transfer students during their first year of enrollment at Alabama State University (ASU). This College sets the stage for entry into all ASU programs and academic offerings. It is an academic unit that provides a dedicated faculty and staff and many services designed to assist students in achieving a successful start. Hence, students are provided activities through the Freshmen Experience Orientation Program which includes study management and life-skills; the Freshmen Convocation Experience which provides excellent speakers and panelists regarding achieving professional milestones, and the Honor’s Program where students experience cultural, educational and service learning activities. Further, Academic Support Centers are available to assist students with all academic pursuits. University College is the road map to all academic offerings of ASU consisting of four-year baccalaureate programs, master’s degree programs, and programs leading to the education specialist degree and doctorate degree.
Our Goals
University College’s major goal is to prepare students to be successful in any of ASU’s degree-granting colleges via three departments: Math and Science, Humanities, and Advancement Studies. Many of the core-curriculum and pre-requisite general studies courses are mastered in University College. Therefore, the academic unit’s mission is to create life-long learners on a successful path who can compete in a global society.
