RADIATION SAFETY
The Office of Research Development develops and supports training workshops. The training workshops serve to help keep the faculty members up to date on cutting-edge research and techniques. The workshops have been beneficial in providing an opportunity for students and faculty to be trained on vital techniques that are used or being incorporated into the research program.
This past Spring Semester 2006 a Radiation Safety Workshop was presented by Dr. Kennedy S. Wekesa the Director of Office of Research Development RIMI. The workshop was held on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon in the Science Building Room 202. The isotopes discussed during this workshop were 14C(carbon), 32P(phosporous), 35S(sulfuf), 3H(tritium). Basic Concepts of radiation safety was presented such as energy as particles and rays, background radiation, irradiation versus contamination, and risks associated with typical occupational exposures. Dr. Wekesa presented the importance of the fundamentals of radiation safety which included the nature and characteristics of ionizing radiation, radioactivity and half-life, natural and man-made sources of radiation, internal and external exposures, irradiation and contamination, use of time, distance, and shielding, radiation monitoring, and contamination control. The Radiation protection standards were also discussed which included dose equivalent, committed dose equivalent, committed effective dose equivalent and total effective dose equivalent.
The Office of Research Development has purchased three radiation safety training DVDs that can be checked out by faculty members and students. The three DVDs are Radiation Safety and Common Sense, Fundamentals of Radiation Safety and Radiation Protection Standards.
