Alabama Reading First Initiative

Alabama was honored to be one of the first three states in the country to receive Reading First Funds. Reading First is part of the No Child Left Behind Act. Through the Alabama Reading First Initiative eligible Legal Education will apply for sub-grant funds to implement scientifically based reading instruction in grades K-3. Following the awarding of the sub-grants, targeted schools will implement improvements in the following four areas: assessment, instruction, leadership, and professional development. This is an exciting time in our state as we strive to ensure that no child is left behind.

REGIONAL SECONDARY READING COACHES

Alabama is in the forefront of educational improvements due to the No Child Left Behind act. The Alabama Reading Initiative formed a secondary team to help meet the literacy needs of the state’s middle and high schools that are Literacy Demonstration Sites. This team is composed of four regional reading coaches led by Pam Duke, Education Specialist for the SDE. The responsibilities of this team include providing professional development, leading monthly training sessions for reading coaches, and providing classroom level support. This team’s purpose is to equip teachers with the skills to rescue those children who were left behind and help them achieve 100% literacy
