Department of Foundations and Psychology

 

The Department of Foundations and Psychology is comprised of three divisions:  Foundations of Education, Business Education and Psychology.  The Foundations of Education courses are designed to foster the professional development of candidates and the Office of Professional Laboratory Experiences, directed by Dr. Vivian DeShields, provides the appropriate applied experiences for candidates.  The Business Education program prepares students to teach business and marketing courses at the secondary level.  The Psychology program offers a B.S. degree in Psychology and prepares students for graduate studies.

Mission

The Department of Foundations and Psychology is committed to developing the necessary knowledge, skills and dispositions of candidates so that they may excel in teaching and in the pursuit of advanced degrees.  Candidates will be cognizant and skillful in the use of technology to enhance learning experiences and will appreciate the value of keeping abreast of emerging technologies and new advancements in their fields of study.  Candidates will seek opportunities to learn about, understand and appreciate the diversity of practices, beliefs and values that characterize our society.  Candidates will learn to value and learn from their experiences in and out of the classroom through conscious reflection.  Candidates who desire to teach will be advocates for their students as a result of their belief that all children can learn and excel.
