College of Visual Arts
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Visual Arts at Alabama State University. Choosing where you go to college is one of the most important decisions that you will make in your life. We believe for many students, Alabama State University is the kind of institution best suited for their studies, career preparation and lifestyle. While students come to our program with different levels of artistic ability and maturity, our faculty takes pride in addressing each of their needs and tries to prepare and assist students to realize their potential as individuals and responsive, informed members of society. Our classes are small and taught by faculty who are leaders in their fields, both academically and artistically. Because of our small class sizes, the faculty members are able to devote time to spend with students on an individual basis as mentors and friends, stimulating their artistic growth while enabling them to prepare and manage the complexities and challenges in the world of art and everyday life.
The current membership of the department consists of seven full time faculty, five part time faculty, a departmental secretary and eighty majors. Our faculty has their terminal degrees from all over the country and many have studied and traveled abroad. The entire faculty is dedicated artists within their selected disciplines. Along with keeping abreast of current knowledge in their teaching disciplines, they exhibit their work regularly on the national and regional level.
Over the years our program has continued to thrive and grow. With incoming art majors almost doubling on a yearly basis, we now have an enrollment of over 80 majors and a graduation rate of over 75%. Our students’ success as graduates depends on their ability to embrace the challenge of college life along with striving to dedicate themselves to their chosen curriculum.
