The MARC Program at Alabama State University (ASU) is designed to improve the “PhD readiness” of the ASU Undergraduate scientific training pool. The MARC program is based upon the need to stimulate interest of minority undergraduates in doctoral science programs.  The MARC program at ASU focuses on

1) Curricular reform.

2) Selecting motivated and talented science students.

3) Enhancement of defined cognitive and developmental skills toward PhD readiness.

4) A continuous (potential 2-year) research experience developed with scientists at major  research institutions.

5) Strong and synergistic institutional commitment.

The MARC Program at ASU is constantly being self-evaluated to increase the long term progress of the professional progression of our graduates.

Selection to the MARC program is based on academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.25), interest in pursuing graduate work in the biomedical sciences, faculty recommendations and personal interviews. Application, transcript, and three letters of recommendation should be submitted to the Program Director, Dr. Robert Villafane, via the Biomedical Research & Training Programs’ office by December 31stof the sophomore year.

The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC U*STAR) program is an honors program for science majors that emphasizes research conducted by undergraduate students.

MARC Students:

· Participate in the Interdepartmental Honors seminar series

· Participate in summer research internships at major research institutions in the United States.

· Attend and make presentations of research at national scientific meetings.

· Receive stipends per year for juniors and seniors.
