Mathematics and Computer Science

The objectives of the department are to help students acquire essential knowledge and understanding of mathematics and computer science for entry-level professional career oppor tunities and graduate study in the respective areas; provide courses for continuing education that satisfy the needs of students who desire courses for professional enrichment; provide education in computer science and mathematical knowledge for students whose major/minor fields are in areas other than Computer Science or Mathematics; and instill in the students the incentive to strive toward excellence and do research in Computer Science and Mathematics

MAJORS AND MINORS
The department offers majors in Computer Science, Mathematics and a dual-degree program in Mathematics/Engineering. Minors are offered in Computer Science and Mathematics. The department cooperates with the College of Education to offer a B.S. program with teacher certification in Mathematics Education. Majors are required to complete the Senior Comprehensive Examination in their respective disciplines before they can be recommended for graduation.

DUAL-DEGREE MATHEMATICS/ENGINEERING PROGRAMS
In collaborative arrangements with Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama State University offers dual-degree programs in Mathematics and Engineering. Students participating in a dual-degree program are required to complete a proS gram of study consisting of approximately three academic years of course work at ASU and approximately two academic years of course work in the School of Engineering at Auburn University or the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After completing the academic requiro. ments of both institutions, the student is awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in mathe matics by ASU and a bachelor’s degree in engineering by the cooperating institution. The student should contact the Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for specific curriculum requirements for each dual-degree program.

The Dual-Degree Program with Auburn University provides students with the opportunity to pursue one of the following engineering baccalaureate degrees:

  • Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering
  • Bachelor of Aviation Management
  • Bachelor of Chemical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering
  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Industrial Engineering
  • Bachelor of Materials Engineering
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Textile Chemistry
  • Bachelor of Textile Engineering Bachelor of Textile Management

Students participating in the Dual-Degree Program with the University of Alabama at Birmingham may elect to complete requirements for one of the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
